  • Book Review: Why Love Hurts

    The Historical Backdrop Of Love

Particularly during the Middle Ages and the subsequent centuries, was marked by a fascinating tapestry of cultural norms and social expectations. These norms were deeply rooted in the concept of chivalry and gender roles, and they came to shape the understanding of love in profound ways.

During the era of chivalry, knights were often romanticized figures in literature and culture, serving as the epitome of masculinity and valour. Their code of chivalry required them to not only protect their kingdoms but also to defend and honour women. This idea of male protectiveness was deeply ingrained and became a cornerstone of societal values. For instance, the tales of King Arthur’s knights, like Sir Lancelot and Sir Gawain, were laden with examples of heroic deeds carried out to save and honour their beloved ladies. Such stories reinforced the perception of women as the fairer sex in need of male protection and adoration.

Furthermore, the literature of the time, such as medieval romances and courtly love poems, often featured the troubadour tradition. Troubadours were poets and musicians who composed songs and poems dedicated to their ladies, idealizing them as paragons of beauty and virtue. These works were replete with imagery of knights performing daring feats to win the affections of these women, again underscoring the role of women as the objects of romantic pursuit.

In medieval art, especially in paintings and illuminated manuscripts, we find countless examples of the woman as an object of devotion and admiration. Women were depicted as ethereal beings, often surrounded by symbols of purity and virtue. The notion of the woman as the “gentle damsel” or the “fair maiden” was a prevalent theme in the visual arts, reinforcing the idea that women were to be revered and protected.

    Love In Nineteenth Century

As societies transitioned into the nineteenth century, the concept of love continued to be steeped in ideals of romanticism. Novels like Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” and Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre” depicted women as gentle and virtuous creatures seeking love and protection from strong, honourable men. These literary works served as mirrors to society, reflecting and perpetuating these gender dynamics.

With the advent of modernity, the transformation of love took a significant turn. Economic factors, rather than chivalric ideals, played a central role in mate selection. Arranged marriages were common, and factors like social standing and wealth often outweighed romantic considerations. For instance, in Victorian England, a woman’s dowry and her family’s social connections were often crucial factors in determining her marital prospects.

This transition was further exemplified by the rise of the novel “Madame Bovary” by Gustave Flaubert. The eponymous character, Emma Bovary, is depicted as a dissatisfied housewife who marries a dull country doctor to escape her family’s financial troubles. The novel is a striking commentary on the economic considerations that often underpinned marriage in the nineteenth century.

As for the shift toward the rationalization of love, consider the works of Charles Darwin. His groundbreaking theory of evolution, particularly his exploration of sexual selection in “The Descent of Man,” provided a scientific framework for understanding the role of attraction in mate selection. This work suggested that mate choice was influenced by qualities that contributed to reproductive success, such as physical attractiveness. This scientific perspective further contributed to the idea that love could be understood in a rational, biological context.

    Love In Modern Times

In the realm of contemporary love, online dating provides a vivid illustration of how societal norms and technology intersect. The internet and dating apps present an idealized version of potential partners. Users curate their profiles with carefully selected photos and descriptions that often paint an idealized picture of themselves. The result can be a mismatch between expectations and reality when individuals meet in person. Countless anecdotes exist of individuals who, based on online interactions, envisioned their date to be vastly different from the person who arrived at the restaurant or coffee shop.

These online dating stories highlight how the virtual world can create a sense of intimacy and connection that may not align with the reality of a face-to-face encounter. It’s as if individuals construct a mental image of their potential partners that is too good to be true, setting the stage for disappointment.

The historical context and societal norms surrounding love have been deeply influenced by literature, art, and evolving cultural ideals. From chivalry in the Middle Ages to the economic considerations of the nineteenth century, society’s perception of love and romance has constantly shifted. The rationalization of love, driven by science and technology, adds another layer to the complex evolution of love in the modern world.

    Conclusion

In summary, the concept of love has undergone a profound evolution in the modern world. The dynamics between men and women, often characterized by conflicting expectations, have shifted from a historically unequal state to a more complex and nuanced landscape. This transformation is marked by the increasing rationalization of love, partly driven by scientific understanding and the impact of the internet and media on our perceptions of love and romance. Despite the challenges presented by these changes, the core message remains: successful relationships are rooted in genuine commitment, passion, and emotional connection.

  • Book Review – Bad Blood: Secret and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup

I don’t frequently read fast-paced novels. Although these are hardly the kinds of novels that would keep most people glued to their chairs, I frequently find myself unable to put a book down. However, I just discovered that I was unable to put a book down once I started reading it.

The emergence and demise of Theranos are covered in John Carreyrou’s book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup. Here is a summary of the Theranos saga in case you are unfamiliar with it: the business made a promise to provide you with an accurate assessment of your health in a short amount of time using only a small bit of blood. Theranos was founded by Elizabeth Holmes when she was just 19 years old, and both of them soon rose to prominence in Silicon Valley. She was on the covers of Forbes and Fortune and gave incredibly well-known TED presentations.

Theranos was valued at around $10 billion in 2013 and even collaborated with Walgreens to distribute their blood testing in retail locations across the nation. The issue? Their technology was useless. It was never even close to succeeding. However, Holmes was so skilled at persuading people to adopt her viewpoint that she wasn’t stopped until after actual patients had used the company’s “tests” to decide how to manage their health. Theranos was formally shut down in August, and she and her former business partner are now potentially facing jail time for fraud.

Up until Carreyrou broke the news as a writer for the Wall Street Journal, the public was unaware of Theranos’ fraud. He was so crucial to the company’s destruction that Bad Blood provides a fascinating inside look.

For want of a better term, some of the information he provides is ridiculous. To test their blood on a Theranos device, Holmes would invite potential investors to the lab. Instead of displaying an error notice, the device had been designed to display a very sluggish progress metre. When the results weren’t available right away, Holmes sent the investors home with a promise to get back to them.

An employee would take the blood sample out of the apparatus as soon as they left and transfer it to a professional blood analyzer. Without their knowledge, her investors had their blood tested using equipment that could be found in any lab in the nation.

Silicon Valley has a lot to gain from the Theranos debacle. A business must have relevant professionals on its board of directors to get started. Several former Cabinet secretaries and senators made up the Theranos board, but none of them had any background in diagnostics during the majority of the company’s existence. If they had, they could have seen the warning signs far earlier.

Because human lives are at stake, health technology demands a different approach than other categories of technology. Carreyrou devotes a lot of his writing to Holmes’ idolization of Steve Jobs and his intransigence in pursuing his goals. That strategy is acceptable for consumer electronics because no one is harmed if a new phone doesn’t perform as promised, but it is reckless for a health company. People suffered as a result of Holmes’ efforts to promote a vision of what Theranos could be rather than what it actually was.

Bad Blood serves as a warning against the benefits of fame. Holmes appeared to be everything Silicon Valley looks for in a CEO: charming, convincing, and with a compelling life narrative fit for magazine features. Nothing improper about that in and of itself. A startup can benefit greatly from having a rock star CEO. But you can’t let fame overtake everything else.

Theranos is the worst-case scenario of what may happen when a CEO puts her own legacy above everything else, but I hope that it won’t be used as a justification to dismiss the next young lady with a great concept. Furthermore, I don’t want Bad Blood to turn people off of next-generation diagnostics. Theranos went above and beyond to avoid meeting quality norms. New diagnostics are put through extensive testing, and the business is heavily regulated.

Although Bad Blood addresses several important moral issues, it is ultimately a suspenseful thriller with a devastating conclusion. It’s an entertaining book chock with odd tidbits that will make you gasp aloud. At times, the narrative seems too absurd to be true (no wonder Hollywood is already planning to turn it into a movie). It seems like the ideal book to curl up with by the fire this monsoon.
