Food Practices To Solve Hunger Problem In Our Country

Different Indian governments have come up with different plans and policies to solve the hunger problem in the country. I am going to list two of those practices here

National Food Security Act

The National Food Security Act to help 800 million people access publicly financed or subsidized food. Thanks to engagement by partners M.S. Swaminathan Foundation and Bioversity International, the government distributes coarse grains, such as millet, sorghum and maize, in addition to the basic staples, rice and wheat. Coarse grains are highly nutritious and they are also highly resistant to climate-induced stresses such as drought and flood. It is estimated that over 31 million Indian farmers grow these crops, and the inclusion of these crops in the law has likely stimulated the production, contributing both to climate adaptation and food security. Add to that the increased income the farmers that grow these crops will receive when the government buys their crops, and India is making progress in addressing the problems of hunger, poverty and climate change in one targeted intervention.

Midday Meal Scheme

To enhance enrolment, attendance, retention and simultaneously to improve the nutritional status of children, a Centrally Sponsored Scheme ‘National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education (NP-NSPE)’ was launched on 15th August 1995. In 2008-09, the scheme was extended to cover children of upper primary classes and the Scheme was renamed as ‘National Programme of Mid-Day Meal in Schools’, popularly known as Mid-Day Meal Scheme covers all school children studying in I – VIII classes in Government and Government-aided schools, Special Training Centres (STCs) and Madrasas & Maktabs supported under Samagra Shiksha. Content and coverage of the scheme have been revised from time to time.
