Robin Sharma in his book The 5am Club states, “Generosity-not Scarcity-is the trait of all of the great men and women who have upgraded our world”
Let’s see if this is true. I researched some of the top businessmen and billionaires and saw that, in fact, this was very true (Sorry for doubting you, Robin).
We start with somebody we all know as a philanthropist and great businessman of our era — Bill Gates. He has donated over $28 billion to his own charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, making him widely recognised as one of the most generous individuals.
$28 BILLION? I can live the rest of my life very peacefully without working a single day if someone donates even 0.1% of that amount to me (sighs).
Now let’s talk about somebody who’s equally famous and smart — Warren Buffett. He has pledged to donate almost $17.3 billion to the Bill Gates Foundation, demonstrating a commitment to giving back.
We see a similar pattern here, another billionaire, same foundation, huge donation amount.
We don’t stop there, let’s talk about somebody who was in the news when the Russia-Ukraine war started — George Soros. He has made significant contributions to various causes through his Open Society Foundations, focusing on areas like democracy, human rights, and education.
Now, there are a lot of conspiracy theories stating that he funds illegal activities and terrorism in the guise of this foundation. But if we take everything at face value, he is a very generous donor considering the magnitude of his donation activities.
Why only Businessmen? Let’s look at celebrities…….so I turned to Bollywood and voila. Same trend! The Bhai of Bollywood is known for his charity work, yes, I am talking about the superstar Salman Khan. He established the “Being Human” organisation, which focuses on helping children and has grown into a large NGO network in India, showcasing his dedication to philanthropy.
Just a request to Bhai. The Being Human apparel collection is very costly, I am generally unable to afford it 🥲.
So yes, it does look like there is a common trait among all the great men and women who are actually changing the world, and that is Generosity. So why are we holding back? You don’t really need to be a billionaire or a superstar to do charity.
You can definitely afford to provide one meal to a homeless person or even if not, help them with some spare change. It might not mean much to us, but it can make a lot of difference to them.
So what are you waiting for?
