During this film, the serotonin surge was REAL. It’s heartfelt, profound, and personal. I like how they show how parents don’t always succeed in being supportive, which hit home for many people, and also Alberto’s predicament with his father (which also hit home for many others), but they still present a beautiful conclusion where Luca’s aspirations and desires are supported by his parents. It demonstrates how to deal with a difficult situation and provides hope for our future children and how we will treat and respect them.
It was such a bittersweet finish. It’s inspiring to see Luca pursue his aspirations despite having to leave his best friend behind (insert eye emoji here), and it’s a realistic circumstance. You can’t always step off the train at the last minute to spend eternity with the one you love, no matter how much you want to. They stayed in touch and are developing and evolving together without suffocating or fostering harmful codependency.
Perhaps I’m reading too much into a fish movie about gay sea creatures, but the film has left an indelible impression on my heart, which I willingly welcome. Wonderful, wonderful film!!! Genuinely, a new favourite. (It also gave me the same serotonin high as meeting new people as a teenager, reminding me how much I enjoy socialising!)
